Make these wonderfully simple and very sweet little DIY fabric Owlies.
Last year I wanted to make some fun Christmas decorations for a craft stall, and came across images of these lovely chaps on Martha Stewart’s website. Unfortunately I couldn’t access the DIY fabric Owlies tutorial so I had a go at making my own version which I think is pretty close. As well as Christmas decorations these are great to make as soft toys or gifts for little ones.
For the little Owlies, I cut a template out of contrasting materials. I went for a more Scandi look, but these would be great with any fabric I think. I stitched two pieces of material together, right sides together, leaving the bottom open and turned them inside out.
The next step was to create the face and beak. To do this I pinned and then stitched the top point over, making sure not to sew through both layers, but only onto the top layer.
I used black thread to create a little V on the point of the fabric which I filled in to make the beak, and a couple of small stitches each side to make eyes.
I stuffed the little owl, then used a wide stitch around the bottom to pull the opening together, making sure the raw edge was pushed inside, and put a few stitches in to hold the bottom together.
Lastly, I put a thread loop in the top so they can hang nicely, and voila! Pretty little Christmas Owls! I liked these small versions, but I’m planning to make a larger version as a stuffed toy.
