My process of card making for my Etsy shop to produce unique cards from original engraving prints.
Over the last couple of months I’ve been putting my time into creating original products for my Etsy shop which will be up and running soon. I’ve had a lot of fun creating eco-printed silk scarves and hand-made bags. But I always make sure I have time to do some card making for my Etsy shop. These cards use prints from some of my engraved blocks. I really enjoy the process of engraving – the design and detail of engraving, and hand printing each one means each is unique.
Creating the prints
I use very strong and thin Japanese paper for the print, and hand burnish each print. This involves inking the block with a hand roller, then placing the paper on top on the block. Next I take a smooth stone and start rubbing the block and paper to transfer the print. I have found it important to start gently and then gradually increase the pressure until I am happy with the definition of the print.
Making the cards
Once the prints are produced I lay out the prints or hang them and let them dry for a day or so. Then I cut them carefully to size and then mount each onto black craft paper. I do this all by eye so that I can make the most of the subtle differences in each print.
Once these are all dry I then mount them onto the cards. It can be a long and slow process, but I am always delighted with the results.
The final step is to fold and sign them. Then I pop them in cellophane sleeves to keep them pristine, ready and waiting to be sent out to customers!
